Meet Freeman & Sear
ROBERT FREEMAN: A native of Los Angeles, Mr. Freeman attended U.C.L.A. and pursued post-graduate studies in the field of Celtic linguistics. He has been a collector of ancient coins since childhood, a hobby that evolved simultaneously with a keen interest in ancient history and classical languages. As a culmination of these pursuits, Mr. Freeman received a degree magna cum laude in History from U.C.L.A. in 1983. Beginning his career at Numismatic Fine Arts as a research assistant, Mr. Freeman displayed a tremendous aptitude for both the academic and business aspects of the ancient art field. He was soon raised to the level of Operations Manager and, subsequently, promoted to Vice President. In 1993, he left NFA and founded Freeman & Sear along with David R. Sear.
DAVID R. SEAR: London-born Mr. Sear has been involved professionally in the field of ancient art since 1958 when he joined the prestigious British numismatic house B.A. Seaby's. In 1964, he was appointed head of the firm's Ancient Coin Department, a position he held for nine years. Between 1964 and 2001, he wrote several important books on ancient numismatics, including Roman Coins And Their Values, Greek Coins And Their Values, Byzantine Coins And Their Values, and The History and Coinage of the Roman Imperators. In the early 1980's, Mr. Sear relocated to California, where he took the position of Vice President at Numismatic Fine Arts (NFA), then the world's largest firm specializing in classical numismatics and antiquities. It was here that he met and began a working relationship with Robert Freeman. Mr. Sear is currently at work on a three-volume revision of Roman Coins And Their Values. The second volume is scheduled for publication in the first half of 2002.
FRANK RYAN: Born and raised in Iowa, Frank studied European history as an
undergraduate at the University of Northern Iowa and ancient history in
graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. He has held academic
positions doing teaching and research in various places, including the
cities of Goettingen and Dresden in Germany. He was drawn to numismatics
only in the course of time, while conducting research on the Roman Republic,
but his interest in ancient coins extends to Greek coins and makes up in
intensity what it lacks in duration. He joined Freeman & Sear in November
2006.
TORY FREEMAN: A native of southern California, Mrs. Freeman is a Pomona College graduate who majored in Classical Studies. After graduation, she lived in Athens, Greece for nearly two years, eventually returning to California and joining the staff of Numismatic Fine Arts in 1985 as an assistant to Mr. Sear. She later took over the areas of inventory and catalog production for NFA. She joined Freeman & Sear full-time in 1995, after working for a few years outside of numismatics.
