ROMAN REPUBLIC: Mn. Aemilius Lepidus. AR denarius (3.97 gm). Rome, ca. 114-113 BC. ROMA (MA in monogram), diademed and laureate head of Roma right, XVI monogram behind / MN (in monogram) AEMILIO, equestrian statue right on base formed by triple-arch (Aqua Marcia?) containing L-E-P. Crawford 291/1. RSC Aemilia 7. RCTV 168. Good very fine.

The triple-arched structure supporting the equestrian statue on the reverse is likely a raised portion of the Aqua Marcia, Rome's first great aqueduct. The structure was supposedly built by the king Ancus Marcius in the sixth century BC and restored ca. 144 BC by the praetor Q. Marcius Rex, who is probably represented by the figure astride the horse. A similar reverse type appears on coins of Q. Marcius Philippus, ca. 56 BC.
