The triple-arched structure supporting the equestrian statue on the reverse is likely a raised portion of the Aqua Marcia, Rome's first great aqueduct. The structure was supposedly built by the king Ancus Marcius in the sixth century BC and restored ca. 144 BC by the praetor Q. Marcius Rex, who is probably represented by the figure astride the horse. A similar reverse type appears on coins of Q. Marcius Philippus, ca. 56 BC.
